Survey Party Chief / Instrument Operator

Department: Survey Engineering

Reports To: Survey Manager

Summary:

The purpose of the Crew Chief is to supervise survey crew in moderate to large-scale surveys.  The Crew Chief works under the guidance of the Survey Manager

Education:

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Two (2) years Instrument Operator experience with progressive crew chief duties

Essential Job Duties:

Internal Operational Responsibilities: 

  • 3 years minimum recommended field and/or office land surveying experience to include: Boundary Surveys, Topographic Surveys, GPS Applications
  • Working knowledge of manual & robotic total stations and data collection
  • Ability to work with managers & co-workers in a variety of exciting, challenging environments
  • Strong sense of responsibility, self-motivation, and willingness to learn and to advance from within the firm. Desire to obtain surveying license preferred.
  • Excellent communication, analytical and organizational skills
  • Valid drivers’ license and excellent driving record

Other Job Duties:

  • Optimizes productivity by proactive planning for efficiency and by keeping the job going in the face of obstacles such as equipment issues or other unknown conditions that may arise
  • Consistently delivers high profitability, quality, and production through sound management of crews. Fully accountable for the accuracy, production, and profitability of the crew

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Maintains current knowledge of regulations regarding land survey and OSHA
  • Good mathematical skills
  • Experience with field data collection software
  • Knowledge of GPS receivers and software
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate well with a variety of people
  • Effective problem solving and negotiating techniques
  • Ability to work as a team member

Physical Demands


Vision:

Must be able to read documents, use computers and see other materials necessary for the ongoing development and serving of clients

Hearing/Talking:

Must be able to hear and speak clearly

Sitting/Walking:

Must be able to sit in a seated position; moving about on foot to accomplish tasks

Lifting/Repetitive Motions/Fingering:

Ability to lift survey equipment; make substantial movements of the writs, hand and/or finger; picking, pinching typing or otherwise working primarily with the fingers rather than the whole hand

Working Conditions and Environmental:

Travel required as necessary.  Must also be able to attend meetings, etc.
